By following the links on this page you can take part in experiments being conducted as part of ongoing research into human memory. These experiments are being carried out by scientists in Human Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychology, at the University of Edinburgh. These experiments are all designed to help us find out more about the way memory works and to shed light on how we store information about the world. To take part in the online research, please follow the links below. However, before you start, please take a moment or two to read the important information below.
|
| What happens in the experiment ? |
| Experiments are run automatically using Macromedia Flash on your computer. Information is presented which you are asked to respond to. Specific details for each experiment are outlined in the page for that particular experiment. |
| What are the data used for? |
| The data are used to help understand the nature of human memory and the way that it works. A large number of people take part in the experiments and conclusions are drawn based on the results of everybody who takes part. |
| Can the experiment tell me anything about my own memory? |
| No. The experiments are not designed to assess the memories of individuals, and also cannot be used to diagnose memory disorders. The reason they are useful is because they allow us to investigate how memories are stored across a huge range of different people. |
| Will I receive feedback on my own performance? |
| No. You will not receive feedback on your personal results. |
| Will I be told what the experiment is about, and what the conclusions are? |
| You will be able to register your email address with us, and we will email you further information about the experiment when data collection is finished and the results have been analysed. This is because we do not wish to influence people's responses prior to their taking part in the experiments. |
| I want to take part but I don't want to give my name. Is that OK? |
|
Of course it is OK. In fact we don't collect or store any personally identifiable information. We don't require that you tell us anything about yourself at all, but usually we ask that you tell us your age, your country of residence, your sex, and some information about your level of education. |
| Who can take part? |
| Absolutely anyone can try the experiments. |
|
Can I speak to anyone about the experiments in detail? |
| Yes, an email contact is available for each experiment. |
| I am interested in your research from an educational / academic / professional point of view. Where can I find out more. |
|
We invite you to look at the websites of Human Cognitive Neuroscience (http://www.psy.ed.ac.uk/research/hcn/hcn.html) and PPLS (http://www.ppls.ed.ac.uk/) at the University of Edinburgh. |
| I liked taking part, and I want to do more experiments... |
