Materials

Activities include:

Development of new regeneration technique to reduce the energy penalty in CO2 capture

Post combustion CO2 capture has been seen as an option for reducing CO2 emission. However, the energy penalty is very high, and 60% of the energy penalty in post combustion CO2 capture is mainly from adsorbent/absorbent regeneration.

In temperature swing adsorption/absorption, CO2 adsorption happens at 600C. The adsorbents/absorbents are then heated to 60oC to release CO2 and 160oC to release SOx, NOx. The adsorbents/absorbents have to cool down to 600C again for next adsorption cycle. This heating and cooling consume a large amount of energy.

Our research strategy is to reduce the energy penalty during the regeneration stage through developing new regeneration technique for low temperature swing, for instance, microwave swing capture.  The project is funded by EPSRC.

Waste Water Treatment

We work on

  1. Development of composite membranes doped by silica nanotubes for water treatment funded by the Royal Society of Engineering
  2. Removal of trace metals and fluoride from water,
  3. Treatment of acidic mining water
  4. Removal of trace radioactive materials from water

Development of UV and visible light active photocatalysts for waste water treatment and chemical reactions

To address the need for effective vis response photocatalysts, we have synthesised WO3 and TiO2 nanowires to provide a fast transport channel for the photo-generated electrons which can retard the charge recombination. We are working on improving the visible activity of the catalysts through modifying the nanocomposites using metal (Ag, W, V, Fe, Ni) and non-metal (C, N, B, S) elements, and through the control over the microstructure, and the morphology of crystal phase.

Enhanced oil/gas recovery and CO2 storage at pore scale

Enhanced oil/gas recovery and CO2 storage are a displacement process at pore scale, in which oil and gas are displaced by water or by CO2 in reservoir, or water is displaced by CO2 in aquifers. The displacement controls the pore connectivity and permeability, therefore oil/gas recovery and CO2 storage capacity.

We have developed an experimental rig to measure wettability of a single pore, and to measure the displacement in a single pore and a core sample. With this rig, we can measure the effect of pore structure, pore wettability, physical and chemical properties of fluids on the displacement and transfer at pore scale under reservoir conditions. The measured pore-scale data can be integrated to pore network.

Measurement of pore wettability and the effect of CO2 phase on its wetting behaviour

Pore wetting is a principal control of the multiphase flows through porous media. However, the contact angle measurement on other than flat surfaces still remains a challenge. In order to indicate the wetting in a small pore, we developed a new pore contact angle measurement technique to directly measure the contact angles of fluids and gas/liquid/supercritical CO2 in micron-sized pores under ambient and reservoir conditions, as well as the effect of chemical functional groups on pore contact angle.

The results indicate that the pore contact angle of a confined liquid in a glass capillary differs from the contact angle measured on a flat glass surface in an open space. Surface tension is not the only dominant factor on contact angle. The static contact angle in a glass pore varies with glass pore size and liquid chemical structure. Viscosity and surface tension can significantly affect the dynamic pore contact angle. A new empirical correlation was developed based on our experimental data to describe the dynamic pore wetting.

The CO2 phase significantly affects the CO2-fluid contact angle in an oil-wet pore. Supercritical CO2-fluid contact angles are larger than gas CO2-fluid contact angles, but are smaller than liquid CO2-fluid contact angles. However, this significant CO2 phase effect cannot be observed in a water-wet pore.

Study granular flow in chemical reactors

We work on

  1. Modelling and measurement of fluid and particle dynamics in chemical, food and pharmaceutical processes, such as fluidization, mixing, granulation, flotation, agitated vessels, coating, die filling.
  2. Identifying flow structure, solid mixing, solid gas contact in bubbling and circulation fluidized beds.
  3. Impact of particle physical properties on solid flow structure, bubble behaviour in fluidized beds for the applications in combustion and renewable energy production;

A ‘Flow Pattern Parameter (FPP)’ has been proposed to identify the solid flow pattern in a bubbling fluidized bed.
